Dr Syn
Dr Syn, a charismatic and unusual figure of the 18th Century, a brilliant scholar and preacher, he was also well known for his fine swordsmanship and horse riding.
Syn resided in the small coastal village of Dymchurch-under-the-wall in Kent, England. He had returned here where he became the vicar after a lengthy time on the high seas when he had assumed the identity of the infamous pirate “Captain Clegg.”
Syn soon found out that many of his parishioners were involved in smuggling as so he ventured to protect them from agents of the Kings revenue. Syn assumed the masked identity of the ‘Scarecrow’ so together with his faithful church sexton; an ex-pirate ‘Mr Mipps,’ he led the smugglers who went by the collective of ‘The Men of the Marsh.’
By day Dr Syn was the respectable vicar of Dymchurch-under-the-wall, however by night he adopted the sinister disguise of the Scarecrow, a much feared, but admired leader of the smugglers of Romney Marsh.
